Vedic maths tutorial

In this first issue I’d like to tell u guyz about Vedic mathematics, a fast expanding field of mathematics. In this first episode, I’ll teach u how to make multiplication simpler. Let’s take 2 numbers (preferably 3 digits, it’ll make a good example) and multiply them using the Vedic methods. Here’s the basic formula used:

(Ax2 + Bx +C) x (Px2 + Qx + R) = (Apx4 + (AQ+BP) x3 + (AR + BQ + CP) x2 + (BR + CQ) x + CR)

Putting x=10 in the above formula we can multiply 2 3-digit numbers.

Now let’s take the 2 numbers 783 and 642 and multiply them. First write them down one below the other as follows.

Now multiply the last digits of each and write down as follows (CR).
7 8 3
6 4 2

Now apply the operation BR+CQ to get the tens digit and write down as follows:
7 8 3
6 4 2
___________
8 6
2

(8×2=16; 3×4=12; 16+12=28)

(2 is carried over)

Now apply AR + BQ + CP to get hundreds place.

Now it looks as follows:
7 8 3
6 4 2
________________
4 8 6
6 2

Now apply AQ + BP to get the 10 to the power 3 place.
7 8 3
6 4 2

Next multiply 100’s place of each (7×6) (AP)
7 8 3
6 4 2

4 7 6 2

Finally add up the product and carry rows to get the answer:

5 0 2 6 8 6

The required answer is 502686. This method can be used to multiply any two natural numbers. Here, I’ve shown you an example of three digit numbers. It can be extended to bigger numbers also, only the number of steps increases.

Here is an example of multiplication of two 4-digit numbers. I’ve shown only the final table.

Similarly set urself problems and try to solve them as quickly as possible. After about 10-15 days practice u must be able to do 3 digit multiplications in about 20-25 seconds. With a little more practice u must be able to do it in 15.

So I hope u will learn quickly and master it so that it will help u to do multiplications quickly in those exams where calculators are not allowed and log tables are tedious or not allowed.
