Aus-based professional body is ignoring the almost surreal events in recent weeks at Satyam Computer Services and bestowing the troubled
software company with an award that recognises the internal training that Satyam conducts for its employees.
The American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) said the Hyderabad company was chosen for the award in December before it was engulfed in the financial scandal on January 7.
However, the events of the past few weeks have no bearing on the decision, it said. “The situation the company is going through is separate and won’t make any difference ,” said ASTD director (governance ) Carol Chulew. Satyam’s Talent Preparation Service was among the 17 workplace learning practices chosen for the awards instituted by ASTD, which claims a membership of over 70,000 workplace learning professionals in 100 countries.
As investigators try to unravel the over Rs 7,000-crore fraud at the company, police say that some 13,000 of the 53,000 staff said to work at Satyam are ghost employees, a view not shared by the government-appointed board which now runs the software provider.
The UK-based World Council for Corporate Governance on January 7 decided to take back from Satyam its highest honour — the Golden Peacock Global Award for excellence in corporate governance for 2008 — after the company’s founder admitted to masterminding the financial fraud.
