Even as the inmates of the Chanchalguda prison lined up to watch the tri-colour unfurl, the tainted promoters of Satyam Computers, Ramalinga
Raju and Rama Raju, and former chief financial officer Srinivas Vadlamani were ordered to stay away the from the flag hoisting ceremony and other celebrations .
For a better part of the day, the trio stayed in the barrack playing chess, perhaps hoping to make strategic moves on the chequered board after his disclosure of a Rs 7, 000-crore fraud took him from the boardroom to the courtroom.
“Raju found himself comfortable playing chess in jail, while other inmates and gaolers were part of the 60th Republic Day celebrations.
Raju, his brother and the former CFO were sent back to the jail on 23 January after four days of police custody. “He (Ramalinga Raju) is the centre of attraction among the jail inmates now” , said Chanchalguda Jail superintendent M Chandrasekhar.
Usually criminals convicted of serious crimes are asked not to participate in congregations held in the jail premises. Security has been tightened for the ex-boss of Satyam as the city is abuzz with rumours that his life could be under threat, but prison officials were tightlipped. This high profile prisoner also seems to have adjusted to the jail routine.
A mere 250 grams of sweet and the normal jail menu of Pulihora (tamarind rice) and lentils was a poor substitute perhaps to the rich Indian and Thai cuisine that Mr Raju relished in his hey days. The hearing on the grant of a special status to Ramalinga Raju as a prisoner is slated for Tuesday
